Trendy Tuesday: Too Much Sexy?

How much is too sexy? Honestly, I believe it’s personal preference. What I view as too sexy may differ from what you may think is too sexy. But, if you consider yourself a Christian woman, I think you should base “too sexy” on your convictions. God never said that if you wear a sexy outfit, you’ll be sent straight to hell. However, we must also keep in mind how we are being perceived and what messages we are sending out. I’ve always been the kind of person who could care less about what others say or think about me, but now that I am maturing spiritually, I am making a greater effort to practice modesty. Modesty can also have multiple meanings. Many people refer to 1 Timothy 2:9-10 that says “Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.”

This scripture doesn’t go too much in to detail, so people may interpret it in many ways. For me, this scripture means to think before I dress myself and to make sure I am accurately portraying my character and what I want others to grasp when they see me. I don’t want to wear an outfit that is selling sex, but then preach that I’m celibate. That’s a total contradiction and may prevent me from successfully spreading the Gospel to those who are watching me. I also think it is referring to humbleness. Just because you have money, doesn’t mean you have to wear 20 gold chains or wear Swarovski crystals everyday.

So this brings me to this new “trend” that Kim Kardashian started at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Kardashian is now sporting see-through mesh tops and dresses with no undergarments. Basically, she’s wearing sheer clothing that allows her breasts to be visible to everybody. Kardashian is known for breaking fashion rules and according to the media she has started trends that have already existed like big butts and cornrows. I’m not going to lie, when I first saw her wearing that black dress on the VMA’s red carpet, I was shocked. Why does she find that outfit appropriate? Does Kanye support her? Will she allow North to dress like that? After all these thoughts swarmed my head, I tried my best not to judge, but it really screwed my head up. If Kim Kardashian wants to wear almost-naked clothing, that’s her prerogative, and it’s not my job to bash her and tell her she’s wrong, especially if that’s not a conviction of hers, but I couldn’t help but think about how much this new “trend” might influence other women and young girls.

Queens don’t have to use their sexuality to get ahead in life. Yes, our sexuality is extremely powerful, but it shouldn’t be the thing we lead with. Sexiness does not only lie in how much of our breasts, thighs, and butts we show the world, but it also lies in how strong we are, how intelligent we are, and how beautiful our spirits are.

What do you think? Is this “trend” too sexy?

Lol oh Kimberly. Thing is, this is her job to sell sex. If you think about it, Kim became famous off a sex tape so this has been her motive from the jump. Now young women who don’t know their worth, are going to by default emulate her because of what she has: money, a billionaire musician for a husband, two cute kids, and a family empire. However, remember when Jesus said “Why gain the world and lose your very soul”, so it’s really all about what you’re selling that you dress the part. If you’re selling sex, you dress sexy, if you’re selling the gospel, you wear the bible. The bible doesn’t mean Amish-length skirts and turtlenecks, it means: my body is a temple (1 co 6:19-20), I consider others better than myself (Philippians 2) so I am not going to make men AND women struggle, etc. I personally feel like when is Kim never doing a lot? Lol so this is not surprising and I feel that young women just need to be taught their worth and know what they want to sell in this life.
