Visualize it!

Every once and a while when I’m feeling particularly bogged down with life it helps to take a step back and do some large-scale goal setting and visualization. I love doing vision boards and it’s a great way to be creative and really think about what you want out of life. There is no limit on it.Vision boards can be whatever you want them to be. Mine tend to be more on the collage side of things but has the same general message: words and pictures displaying either daily aspirations or goals that you have. I love it because you don’t necessarily have to be the most artistic person ( and trust me, I’m not) but you can still have a finished product that looks great and does exactly what you want. Regardless of what it looks like, just the process  of working on a vision board can be calming. It takes the list of goals that we all make and kicks it up a notch. Essentially you can take that list and give it life, take it off the page and make it real. Get creative and accomplish those goals that you set out for yourself!

Here’s my example!

Discussion time

So I’m really into Ted Talks, overall they just shed light on topics that we don’t really think about or give a different perspective. Below are my top 5. What do you think?

  1. Teach Girls Bravery, not Perfection.

2. My year of saying yes to everything

3. Change your mindset, change the game

4. The art of being yourself

5. Living without shame: How we can empower ourselves

History in the making

I told myself I wasn’t going to talk politics but this is way too important to pass up. As you know, it’s Election Day Eve. Tomorrow the US will have elected a new President. (Oh and if you still don’t know where your polling location is; check this out!) With the craziness of this election: the drama, lies, and scandal; it’s easy to forget the historical significance of it all.

If Hillary Clinton or Jill Stein wins the election, she will be the first female President in the history of the United States. That is truly astounding. But who were some of the trailblazers who came before them to make this even possible?

  1. Victoria Woodhull, 1872: First woman to run for President (Fun fact: Frederick Douglass was her running-mate and was the first African-American ever to be nominated for VP)

2. Shirley Chisholm, 1972: First African American women to run for President

Just the fact that women have been trying since 1872, for 144 years, to be the leader of the country and we have a very real chance of seeing it all those years of work come to fruition is amazing. Just think of the wonders it will do little girls all around the country (and the globe). Representation really does matter.

On another note: regardless of who you vote for tomorrow; please vote. This is a right that many people don’t have and we shouldn’t take that for granted.

A shift in perspective

Lately , I’ve been in a rut. Unhappy with my performance at my job, aspects of my social life and more.  But then today during lunch it hit me, why bother complaining about all the things I don’t like? Who exactly is that benefiting? The answer is simple, no one.

So starting today, I’ve decided to make a list with three columns each day. One for all the good things in my life, the next for the things I want to change, and the last one is for my goals or dreams.

That last column I think is the most important. It’s so easy to get caught up in the everyday stresses and the little things that can take away from your joy. One of my favorite teachers in high school always said “life sucks then you die”. And as pessimistic as that sounds, for a long time I thought that was true. Go to school to get a job. Work to get a paycheck to pay bills. Repeat repeat repeat.

I’m just now coming to realize that it’s not. Sure, it can be bad sometimes. But there’s so much more to live for.
